NYE w/ Keys N Krates (live) + guest djs galore

Tonight we have the talented homies Keys N Krates (youtube channel) playing our NYE party. I don't know why I haven't posted about them before - dudes are straight taking the remix game to a whole new level with their intricate fusion of turntablism, sampling, and live instrumentation.

One of their first gigs, about a year ago:

Several months later, headlining the Livestock annual block party:

Recent trailer for their upcoming mixtape, presented by URB Magazine:

The KnK fam will be joined by Drastik & Kaem in the main party room, while the basement room will feature Sound Syndicate's entire dj roster for all the the house heads.

Toddla T & Herve x DJ Sega

DJ Sega with a deadly new edit. I think a lot of people see "DJ Sega remix" and simply assume its a baltimore beat slapped on top of a track - but there's more to this Mad Decent young'n than mere bmore sound affiliations.

OH SNAP!! x Treasure Fingers

Treasure Fingers back with another disco touched goodie. This time a remake of an OH SNAPP!! joint, with minor sampling of his own "Cross The Dancefloor".

Jesse Rose - Morning Would

I can't think of a single Jesse Rose mix or track that I haven't liked. Ever. This new joint is quite simple - but incredibly smooth & effective.

Busy Signal x Drake

Been seein' a lot of really shitty Drake remixes at the top of the hype machine popular charts lately. Awful attempts at speeding his otherwise slow delivery into something way too fast to suit the fist pumping clientele. How are these brutal wrongly matched pitch-fucked offbeat "remixes" getting so much (I'm talking 10,000+ downloads in 48hrs) love? I'm no dj... but you won't find me dancing in the laundry room to the sound of my shoes in the dryer.

If you're really tryin' to get the Drake crowd to slap the nearest wall when you drop an edit, at least play it safe and go with something they'll pop off (equally) to - a dancehall version:

Busy Signal - Nuh Fraid Of Them

...and if set on catering to the club peoples, go with a version (of another song) that actually fits & goes well:

Drake - Best I Ever Had (Grandtheft remix)

You've Got The Love (The XX & Renaissance Man remixes)

Not a newbie by any means, but somehow overlooked throwing it up back in September. Florence + The Machine getting a super clean & well put together remix, courtesy of The XX.

Florence + The Machine - You've Got The Love (The XX remix)

And just recently released, the slightly more club appropriate edit, from can-do-no-wrong duo Renaissance Man:

araabMUZIK x MPC

I'm buggin'. This is absurd filthy.

"BOYS A PROBLEMMM!!!" is right.

Jacked from NahRight via A-Trak.

Theophilus London - Cold Pillow

Just ran into this joint on my itunes - don't know why I hadn't upped it before. I first heard of Theophilus London this past summer when Rye Rye (first artist signed to M.I.A.'s label) had to back out of the entire tour with A-Trak due to pregnancy, & Theo was named replacement for the live portion. I was feelin' the boy (pause), and looked forward to seein' him do his mellow Cudi-esque thing. We only found out a week before the party that he would not be able to make our (or any other eastern Canadian) gig. Damn. I'd still like to see how his live set goes down.

Vybz Karetl & Shebba - Do Me Dat

You'd think after all these years in the game Vybz would have at least one proper hi-res press picture. But nah - he keeps it gully. Webcam quality photos, still rockin' the shirtless skinnyness (in most pics) with the huge belt buckle & 90's gino shades. Love him for that.

Can't go wrong with this joint.

Whoa. This cat straight finger tutts the shit out of edIT's (1/3 of Glitch Mob) killer glitch joint.

Great song choice. Here's the mp3 of the track used:

edIT - Ants

Mitch Hedberg (videos)

Ahhh Mitch, one of the best. RIP.

Buraka Som Sistema - IC19 (Deathface remix)

This has been on steady repeat for days. The great drop @ the 3:04 mark is what did me in. Hadn't actually hit up Deathface's myspace 'till just now - and shit is scaaaary. The sort of scary that if moms had seen me on it when I was 12, she woulda been mad worried about me & sent my ass back to Europe until university. Deathness aside, I flicked through the myspace pics to discover (to my great surprise) that he's actually one of our past guest djs (from a Capital Fashion Week closing party we collaborated on last November). Turns out its Johnny Love (1/2 of the no longer active Kitsune duo Guns 'n' Bombs). Quiet, soft spoken Johnny Love, making deathly bass music. Never woulda guessed.

Wale - Contemplate

Wale's debut album "Attention Deficit" dropped through Allido Records (Mark Ronson's label) & Interscope just 8 days ago. The long awaited compilation was leaked (boo, shitty deal) a close 6 days before the release date, but I'm sure the real Wale fans will pay their dues and purchase the cd nonetheless.

Gotta say though (on the truth tip), after skipping through the entire album, I wasn't as impressed as I thought I'd be. Not with Wale's track record, previous mixtapes, and lengthy hype for the 1st album, at least. Not to mention the album's absolutely ridiculous production credentials (Ronson, Cool & Dre, 9th Wonder, Green Lantern, J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League). I wanna say my expectations were too high but, damn, look at that stacked lineup.

I won't cement the decision just yet though... I'm going by mere song clips, as opposed to the entire effort. Until I cop the fully, this be my top pick:

Wale - Contemplate (ft. Rihanna)

Preview the entire album over here.

Raphael Saadiq - Seven

Was just talking about Saadiq yesterday. Big tour, comin' through every nearby city but ours, wondering whether or not people here would be up on his stuff enough to support an Ottawa tour date. This be the typa sound I'd love to eventually book here... just wish I was more in touch with the clientele & crowd that feels it as much as I do.

Mayer Hawthorne

Is everyone up on their Mayer Hawthorne-ness? If not - get familiar. My single sentence scrunched run-down of Mayer goes as follows: Michigan bred modern replica of the 70s' finest original soul recordings. His lengthier, slightly more detailed, bio version can be found here.

Mayer Hawthorne - Wish It Would Rain

No surprise Stones Throw (a label that I've previously praised for leading by example & signing properly deserving artists) was, once again, on the ball with the talent snatch-up.

"I think Mayer is the only artist in the history of the label that I've signed after hearing only two songs. Sometimes, you just know it’s the right thing to do."

The above family pic is just plain awkward, but the below link is what I'm really talkin' about.

Miike Snow x Caspa

Caspa's take on Miike Snow, much like Kissy Sell Out's on Burial (back here), is right up my alley - the slower, less wobbley face of dubstep.

Miike Snow - Black And Blue (Caspa Remix)

Few more Miike Snow edits back here.

And while on the Caspa / dubstep tip... the below tutorial features Caspa's heavier remix fondling, this time of TC's "Where's My Money".

Another failed Drake music video

Forreal? Shit sucks. Directed by the legendary mister Hype Williams? Hype, the fucks wrong with you? How do your go from your unsuprassable videography resume to THIS? Since when does Drake & a greenscreen + Kanye & sparks + Weezy & club booth + Eminem & Slaughterhouse (Royce da 5'9", Joe Budden, Joell Ortiz, Crooked I) entourage + ghetto pixelated youtube video rips of Lebron's basketball progression = a music video? Not to mention, none of them are even in the same city for the shoot. The Lebron thing throws me off the most though - why does the video dickride him? I don't get the reasoning behind it. Can't be courtside seat hookups or free nikes... everyone featured on the track can more than afford both.

Videofail.

*UPDATE: Apparently the song is on the soundtrack of Lebron's "More than a game" documentary (hence the Lebron highlight reels). Still a pretty half-ass way of throwin' him in the mix though.

Kid Sister x Kingdom (+ rant)

I'm feelin' the Kingdom take on Kid Sis. I only heard the edit as a 30 second preview last week, so props to RCRD LBL for the exclusive full freebie. It's a beauty.

Kid Sister - Right Hand Hi (Kingdom remix) (direct link for download)

The original version, produced by the heaviest of heavy house hitters, Angello & Ingrosso, has been on rotation for quite some time.

Kid Sister - Right Hand Hi (direct link for download)

I was pretty on the fence about it when it came out. The production is fantastic (can't front on that) but, as much as Mel stayed true to her old style, I just found the chorus too radio-friendly pop. Its the only thing that threw me off. But, in retrospect, I was being an uber music snob - hatin' on an artist's style morphing, when I shoulda been content that they're movin' up in the industry. It musta been stupid hard to maintain her usual technique & delivery once someone as big as Downtown (distributed by Universal Music & tightly knit with Atlantic Records) signed her. You gotta sacrifice some & be open to having a few drops of mainstream squeezed into your test tube. She did go back to studio to re-do this album, what, 2 or 3 times? I guess she had to silly putty her delivery & musical direction significantly in order to appeal to the new target audience. You can do your thing on sold out Coachella stages, merk hype machine's top ranks, and fill ipod playlists of blog-driven teens... but most of that will only you get you so far. She had gotten as big as she possibly could in the world that supported her come-up. That's where the corporate giants step in to fill the gap between being a subculture top runner & having your album on commercials & HMV/Amazom homepages. This is where Downtown does their shit right, won't lie. They're probably one of the finest labels in terms of stepping in as the bridge between our "scene's" leaders and media exposure with the massive that would otherwise never touch the material. Just peep their roster... everyone from Mos Def & Gnarls Barkley to Justice, Major Lazer, & Amanda Blank. It's no accident Santigold blew up, MSTRKRFT produced & appeared on Letterman with John Legend, or Crookers teamed up with Kardinal Offishall. Downtown does, after all, have direct label partnership deals with Fool's Gold, Mad Decent, and Dim Mak.

I guess all I'm gettin at isssssss Kid Sis Mel, good on you. She movin' on up. And music synergy, I support you. And Downtown, waddup.

/end rant

Top 5 - August

Pic: Louise Wells

I finally put together my top 5 tracks of August for The Docking Station music site. Just as the month before, the choices are what I've had on heavy rotation @ home, as opposed to new releases for the month of August. Few of the joints are recent, rest are almost forgotten goodies.

Snatch the pickings below, or hop on over to the chart on TDS for a slightly more detailed writeup of the songs.

* UPDATE: Got a Blogger DMCA takedown notification‏ for this post. Not sure which of the below tracks (they never specified) are considered copyright infringement, but they've already taken the post down twice... so you'll have to find the versions yourselves. Sorry!

TONIGHT - special guest Talib Kweli @ our party!

I've been major failin' @ blogging this month. My bad on that. Last few weeks have been hella busy... from the launch of our new weekly party, to having Rampage come through last week, to being permadrunk/hungover.

Anyways, time to hop back on the net game. Tonight, as a part of our new Saturdays, we have the MTV Love Fest Tour w/ Team Canada DJs comin' through. Thanks to Ritual Nightclub's 2 floor capacity, we were able to add on one of our favourite peoples in the game - Talib Kweli. Kweli's tour dj, Chaps, will be holdin' the lounge down (with Kweli on hosting, drinking, mic fun duties) while Team Canada & Drastik handle the upper level dancefloor.

No advance tix, $12 @ door before 11:30pm.

Vaughn (DJ U-Tern) just posted this link on facebook. Jack-mode!

Dwele - Travelin' Girl (live music video)

Some real goodness, uploaded just last week.

I always hear people bitchin' about how the music industry is plummeting, and how nobody makes real material anymore. I can't stand hearing that shit. I won't front on the fact that 80% of current releases are plain wack-attack ('cause they are), but I will front on the fact that people don't take the time of day to really look past the mundane and discover the other 20% that exist around the corner.

We have Raphael Saadiq:

We have Janelle Monae:

We've always had Dwele:

And we have plenny more out there.

Wildlife - Nature

Not gonna lie, trynna find an appropriate picture to post by google image searching "wildlife nature" was the worst idea I've had all week. Shoulda expected to get riddled with pics of trees, bears, waterfalls, birds, & freelance wildlife/nature photographer advertisements.

But hey, meet the leaf-less Wildlife, a Brooklyn trio composed of Gabriel Cohen-DeVries, Andrew Doga, & Tomek Gross. They have 20 myspace friends & make me wanna start my own label so I could start releasing & putting out music like their "Nature" joint before others jump on it.

South Rakkas Crew & Fake Blood commercial

Fake Blood remix of SRC's "Mad Again" used on the commercial for the upcoming America's Best Dance Crew season.

Always good to see hardworking homies get some big corporate mainstream love.

Rampage!

As soon as I typed the word 'rampage' in my previous post I reminded myself of some stuff I failed to upload this past week. Chicago's Rampage (of Ghetto Division & Nightshifters label) has been on a steady tear since his "War" EP release - pumpin' joints out left 'n right, each better than the previous. Hope to have the homie come play one of our parties soon... shit would be hella fuckery.

Rampage - Loving U Is Easy

To get a better idea of Rampage's musical mind-state, snatch his recent summer minimix. 25 tracks & a slew of original works fast paced into 19 minutes of heavyness.

DJ Rampage - Summer Minimix 09

Tracklist:
Inner City – Big Fun
Armando – 100% dissin you
6 Bells All – Me the Mailman

The Heavy x Joker & Solo

I've been on a mini dubstep downloading rampage this past week. When not grabbin' the heavyness, I've just been listening to a shitload of loungy bongo filled goodness. This post kinda morphs the 2, given Joker's usual approach & Solo's taste in drums (most evident in his fabriclive promo mix). Original courtesy of The Heavy.

Drake - Best I Ever Had (video spoof)

YES.

TONIGHT: Jokers Of The Scene + Drastik + Illo (new addition!)

Our monthly Disorganised party pops off tonight. Even the good homies over @ Fool's Gold Records are pushin' it. Our partners in crime, Jokers Of The Scene, have been doing massive touring this past year (even moved to Europe for 2 months due to the number of gigs they were booked for) so its great to finally have the boys back to play on their own turf. Both JOTS & Drastik have been steady readying themselves for the hometown throwdown. Drastik has been sick for the past week or two, so when not kleenexing mid-mixing @ various gigs, he has been kleenexing while downloading copious amounts of new music. I know this because both my toilet paper inventory & internet speed have miraculously halfed during his last visit.

JUST ADDED TO THE BILL! DJ Illo will be throwin' down as well (4 turntable set w/ Drastik).

Martyn - Hear Me

Some laid back dubstep, without all the wah-wah-wuh-wohhh. Woulda been quite on the Burial tip had the vocals been female, and drums slowed down. This is just one joint off Martyn's self-released (through his "3024" label) Great Lengths LP but, honestly, choose any track from the release & you'll be overly satisfied.

Red: The Man Without The Machine

This the typa shit I love to see. Homeless jail hopping hidden musical gem "Red the Rap Stallion" gettin' his unmistakeable talent youtube'd into a record release. No vocoder, talk-box, or studio manipulation... just straight beatboxing & funk vocals with chest punching twists.

Here is the original footage of Red alley kickin' his "I Should Tell Ya Momma on You" creation. Recorded (December '08) behind Cali's HVW8 Art & Design Gallery, the clip was filmed & thrown online by the HVW8's Tyler "Ty G" Gibney.

Red's demand for label exposure & opportunity to showcase his skills has, due to the video's 360,000+ youtube & 1.3 million worldstarhiphop.com hits, become more than just possible. A buncha cats have since upped their edits & renditions of the original, but it wasn't until the gallery's people hooked up with the Stones Throw Records heads that shit got serious.

The original "I Should Tell Ya Momma on You" saw an EP release through iTunes just last week (July 23rd), with official remixes by Dam-Funk (Stones Throw) & CHOPS (Bun B, Jeezy, Game). Damn, that West Coast sound is nice.

I'm really feelin' his "a setback is a setup for a comeback" mentaility.

"Proceeds of this album will go to Red with the intention of getting him off the street and ending the vicious cycle of the California prison system, with the hope of a better tomorrow."

This Cinderella story needs pushin' - hit the iTunes purchase page for your contributing nudge.

A-Trak & Treasure Fingers - TONIGHT!

Ayo Ottawa. The homie & 5 time world dj champion, A-Trak, is rollin' through town tonight with another one of our great friends, Treasure Fingers! They bringin' some next level lights, a stuffed horse with a bigger fanclub than your fave boy band, a limited toy signing session before the club, and as expected... a musical ride that no djs can parallel. I shit you not. Trizzy was the first (& only, I think?) dj to ever have me dancing in a drunken I-don't-even-care-what-I-look-like-right-now closed eye fashion (see pic), back on his Sunglasses Is A Must tour. I lost friends that night, I'm positive.

Miike Snow - Burial (video) + Animal (remixes)

Talk about a perfectly fit video. While on the Miike Snow train, "Animal" remixes are still on steady rotation in my itunes. The song itself has been reworked by everyone from Punks Jump Up to Peter Bjorn and John.. but I've always gravitated towards these 3 versions:

Miike Snow - Animal (Treasure Fingers remix)

Miike Snow - Animal (Crookers remix)

Top 5 - July

Ayo! I just started a monthly top 5 chart thingy over @ The Docking Station site. Most of you blogger mahfuckas are on a mission to grab music while hurdling the short essay explanations of the songs... so these monthly charts will prove to be a quick 'n easy snatch. Figured since we have multiple contributing writers over there, might be a good look to throw together a "what I'm feelin right about naooow" go-to spot... without it having to reflect only the newest or most blogged about artists/songs.

For quicker streaming & downloading, see my July picks @ the chart listing OVER HURR, or zshare'em from below.

"Blogger has been notified, according to the terms of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), that certain content in your blog infringes upon the copyrights of others. The URL(s) of the allegedly infringing post(s) may be found at the end of this message."

Someone please feed the DMCA a nice hot plate of testicles. 40% of my posts don't last more than a single day on here anymore. Blogging turns pretty lame-game when half the songs you upload suddenly vanish, without a single caution/warning email.

Sooo guys, since I can't re-up the song, you'll have to find this one yourselves. If your ass knows how to blog, your ass should know how to google search.

The boys Talib & Tek never fail. How long have they been pumpin' goodness for now? And they STILL come through with a stellar track & video to match.

Which reminds me... just saw the new Drake video today. Shit is straight boring. Put some thought and originality into your music videos, "artists".

Loss for words....

I wouldn't even know where to start, so I won't.

This is one of those times where people just need to shut up, put his music on, and engulf themselves in the musical greatness that will never be matched.

54 minutes of MJ. Thank you, DJ Ayres.

"Reminds you to enjoy life and to forget the time"

Jump on over to the Denise Julia Reytan's portfolio & peep her T1mepeace concept.

Ryan Leslie x Pusha T

Damn, Pusha with the illy delivery. Shoulda had him run it waaaaay before the 2:44 mark though.

Metric x Tom Wrecks

I've been steady bumpin' this for a month now. Woulda thrown it up back when I first received it (pause), but had to wait for Tom to fuck with a few minor details before uploading the final version.

Treasure Fingers remix

When AJ isn't matching his eyes to his fingers while chillin' topless holding discoballz, he is making stupidly good remixes.
