U-Tern - Hip-House 2008

Just got this from West coast homie Vaughn (U-Tern) via facebook:

"Any one remember that short-lived genre in the late 80's called "Hip-House"? If you were around for that era you were either the hardcore hip-hopper that kind of hated what it represented, or you were in the club losing your shit to "I'll House You" by the Jungle Brothers. I wanted to see what it might sound like in the present day, an experiment if you will. So I took a gang of current house tunes, some classics and a bunch of acapellas and made it happen."

Wow, holy shit.

DILATED PEOPLES - August 29th

We're bringing LA's Dilated Peoples (Rakaa Iriscience, Evidence, DJ Babu) to town this Friday for their first Ottawa appearance. Some of you might know Babu from his DMC & ITF (International Turntablist Federation) involvements & titles, but most of you are probably familiar with the 2001 Alchemist-produced "Worst Comes to Worst" group track. It'll be nice to have the boys come through.

Houston's history, hustle, and codeine

I just bumped into this 5 part VBS TV special on Houston's historical spot in the rap game. From syrup sippin' and 3 mph driving, to never-ceasing mixtape grinds and DJ Screw's (RIP) chopped & screwed ways. I had to watch.

I used to be all about the southern steez. The first spot I lived at after moving out of the fam's place was this house with 3 fellow basketball players, brothers Colby & L-Dog, and big man Chubbz. Ball and loud music, all we cared about. Perfectly soundproof pad too. Soundsystems and computers were never turned off, and all playing southern mixtapes like they were going out of business. Bathroom would boom with "SOUTHERN SMOKE!" track intro yells (why so often DJ Smallz, whyyy?) during showers, while the living room filled with sounds of Trae, Webbie, Mi'ssez, Stat Quo, Sleepy Brown, and Da Backwudz. I miss the days.

"Screwed In Houston", all 5 parts below. Enjoy.

Jamiroquai x Calvin Harris

So UK's Calvin Harris is in Toronto this Friday, Montreal on Saturday... and, ofcourse, no Ottawa date around it. What a shitty deal. Woulda been nice to see him live, or even a dj set to hear some of his newer production.

And you can't forget about his Dizzee Rascal production.

Mujava - Township Funk (video)

This is too filthy. I first heard the track about 2 months ago and, while frantically missioning to find the mp3 today, ran into the video. The killer South African dancefloor sound is courtesy of Attridgeville township's DJ Mujava. Video is legit too.

It'll be out on Warp Records next month.

eMC - Winds of Change

eMC has to be one of the best out there. The lyricist supergroup, made up of Juice Crew's Masta Ace, Midwest's Stricklin, and Lyricist Lounge duo Punchline & Wordsworth, is as talent stacked as one can come by.

The Count & Sinden

Neither new joints, but both legit. Graeme & Joshua with some Sam Sparro and Rye Rye spice.

Coldplay x Buena Vista Social Club

Anything Buena Vista related gets me. My dad has always been all about the Cuban sound, so I've grown to love talents such as Ibrahim Ferrer, Omara Portuondo, & Compay Segundo. The same type of appreciation that I have for "Barefoot Diva" Cesaria Evora.

DJ Jazzy Jeff x Kardinal Offishall

More Kardi Kardi Kardi. This time with the always great Jazzy Jeff, off his 2007 released "The Return of the Magnificent" album (which also features Rhymefest, Method Man, J-Live, Big Daddy Kane, Jean Grae, CL Smooth, Biz Markie, + a slew of others).

Bloc Party x Herve & Flosstradamus

Bloc Party's new "Mercury" (music video back here) getting some love from UK's Herve & Chi-town duo Flosstradamus. Both edits bang well.

Rhymefest ft. Chamillionaire & Jadakiss - What's Up

- I love Rhymefest (props to Ronson for Allido-ing him up with Wale).

- I like Chamillionaire 'cause I've always found he kinda looks like a dog (am I the only one who sees it?).

- I like Jada 'cause he used to get shit on by everyone (note: 40% of NYC + Beanie Sigel + 50 Cent + Bill O'Reilly = everyone).

- I love Aladdinesque beats. I'm all 'bout em.

- I like fun facts.

- Fun fact: Jada got robbed by Gucci Mane a few years back.

Mom & Dad - Sexmachine

Meet Jimmy Del Barco. He is from Cali. He is still a teenager. He goes by Mom & Dad. He is on some serious shit. This is his James Brown sampled banger.

Keep an ear out for him, peoples.

Grandtheft heat

Sunday night was mad messy. The Redbull Flugtag Competition afterparty had homies Raph & Aaron (Team Canada) sharing the tables with fellow EH! Team member Illo. It was at a huge venue that, when not booked for concerts or special events, only opens its doors Saturday nights for the uber-tanned top40 house bottle service loving peeps. The inter-club connected block party with the 2 neighbouring venues mixed the crowd up and had their usual clientele wylin' out to hipsterrific dancefloor ragers. The familiar fam (Redbull reps, Jokers of the Scene, & close friends) ended up crowding the stage and almost shattering it from perfectly timed group jumping. Bigups to Illo for passing the mic & letting me splurge my inner reggae self with drunken Red Rat lyrics. Big sorry to Gaby for hitting her in the face with a speaker & making her head bleed.

Here are a few of Aaron's (DJ Grandtheft) joints:

Lil Wayne - Lollipop (Grandtheft hiphouse remix) (zShare)

Chromeo - Fancy Footwork (Grandtheft remix) (zShare)
