Nicolas Jaar

Nicolar Jaar is still a teenager. That's absolutely nutty. How does someone this young make/understand such fine sounds? Dude is going to become a household name in a genre that was born before him if he keeps this production up.

Jamie Woon x Ramadanman

The production on Jamie Woon's "Night Air" original is absolutely amazing. So amazing that I wasn't remotely surprised when I found out it was co-produced by Burial. Heavy layering, deep moody atmosphere, and vocal echos galore... all aspects that scream Burial involvement. Just when I thought the track couldn't be touched up or further improved, Ramadanman comes through. And he comes through big time.

C.R.S.T

Always feelin' C.R.S.T joints. The South Wales crew, whose name derives from the first letters of all its members' names (Chesus, Rodski, Stroud,Tony Blitz), has been steady pumping some of my favourite UK sounds (from Garagae & Funky to the more bass-heavy).

Their most recent killer:

Mista Men - What You Do To Me (C.R.S.T Remix)

...and some slightly older goodness:

The Count & Sinden - After Dark (ft. Mystery Jets)(C.R.S.T Remix)

Kele - On The Lam (C.R.S.T Remix)

The XX - Shelter (C.R.S.T Remix)

J. Cole - Friday Night Lights (Mixtape)

I was in NYC last week and this was the sole thing I listened to. Five days straight, constant repeat... probably a solid 10-15 times, front to back. Last I (this thoroughly) enjoyed a tape was when Yelawolf's "Trunk Muzik" first dropped at the dawn of the year. There's somethin' about J. Cole that's mad universal, from production to delivery. The boy (for serious though, he's an '85 baby) pinches on just about every (rap) tastebud - and it's evident as the mixtape unfolds. Whether love for the Kanye-eque ("Blow Up"), the Wale flow ("You Got It", featuring guess who), Royce Da 5'9" influence ("See World"), or hook reminiscent of somethin' 50 might have done in '03 ("Love Me Not")... the young'n is all-embracing. Solid, solid, solid.

Poka

I don't know much about this Poka cat, but I do know this - he's from Athens, and he's damn good with his disco-house. First bumped into the "99 Style" track roughly 3-4 months ago and have since been steady grabbing his material (II).

DJ Illo - Live In The Bassment Mix

I'm a tad/month late on upping this stellar mix by the good fam Illo. Recorded live (something more people need to get back on), the journey touches all things fine with the classic house sound that ceases to get old & outdated.

Bang Bang Bang (U-Tern, Count & Sinden remixes)

I didn't want to up this back when I first heard it (August?) 'cause I wasn't sure whether or not Mark Ronson would include the homie U-Tern's edit in the release. Seems even though released as a bonus cut on Ronson's "Record Collection", it was made available for free download. Although partial to U-Tern's fondle, the original and Count & Sinden versions are absolutely great in their own rights - so all 3 are worthy of the grab.

Frenzy w/ KINGDOM

Our October edition of Frenzy features Fool's Gold & Night Slugs powerhouse Kingdom. We're extremely pleased to have some heavy NYC RnBass bless our system/dancefloor.

Sean Kingston - Letting Go (Ft. Nicki Minaj) (Kingdom Dub)

Kingdom - Hottest In America

"Kingdom is a Brooklyn-based producer and DJ whose signature sets and productions have been gathering a rabid following since he released his first mixtape in 2006. Since then, DJs from Diplo to BBC’s Annie Mac have given his tracks spins, and with his recent signing to Fools Gold Records and the video for his debut single “Mind Reader” airing on MTV2, there’s no doubt that Kingdom is the young American producer to watch. Kingdom may play everything from kuduro to juke, but R&B is his first love, and it shows in his bass-heavy remixes and original tracks, often featuring R&B vocal samples on top of his trademark production style—what some have called “a Brooklyn take on the UK garage sound.” This vanguard of tropical blends, Latin stylings and bass-heavy, dance-savvy sounds from around the world is catching the ear of more than a few tastemakers. Kingdom has received positive press and praise from magazines such as The Fader and XLR8R, to trendsetting sites such as Pitchfork and Discobelle, but his eclectic, forward-thinking style blows right past the buzz. Bok Bok of the London-based Night Slugs collective attested: “The genres Kingdom dips into range across the board, but his mixes create within themselves a new logic, a gutter house aesthetic that just makes sense."

Gucci Vump - Shashtilism

Whatever happened to the whole secrecy behind Gucci Vump's real identity? Last I heard (about a year ago) the Sound Pellegrino label kept it on the low due to the producer's extremely high profile and industry ties/rights. Never really bothered to look to much into it since.

Whoever it may be, I'm feelin' the "Shashtilism" joint. Quite an odd tune, but I think that's why I enjoy it. Very mystical/fairy tale sounding - definitely the song you'd expect to hear walking into a club in Wonderland, with (of age) drunk arm candy Alice.

Brodinski - Arnold Classics (remixes)

Brodinski's "Arnold Classics EP" just saw its release on Sinden's brand new label, Grizzly. The new imprint will be focusing on the often genre unpinpointable "grey area" of club music. Brodinski's effort is the just the 2nd Grizzly release, with remixes courtesy of Egyptrixx, DJ Sega, and Tony Senghore.

Mayer Hawthorne covering Tony Bennet (video)

Shit. Speaking of Hawthorne (previous post) - just bumped into this gem. Mayer covering a Tony Bennett original, for a tri-company collab (Stones Throw x HUF x Freegums). As biggups to the close of Mayer's recent tour, the three heavyhitters teamed up to create the below video, a limited t-shirt, and a heart shaped USB drive with the Bennet cover. Peep it all here.

Snoop Dogg x Mayer Hawthorne

I've been heavy on the Hawthorne since I first heard his stuff back in September. Apparently Snoop was equally impressed, and went on a Mayer hunt for collaborative purposes. The two link up, get to studio, and absolutely blow minds with their first effort. I've had this on constant repeat for over 2 weeks now.

Crookers do Miike Snow & Rye Rye

THESE.
BANG.
HEAVY.

[STREAM ONLY]

The Rye Rye track (pre-wobble) sounds like something you'd hear on an EA Sports "NBA Street" game.

I went a little bit more into detail about Crookers, their album, and their own radio station on the upcoming Grand Theft Auto game over in this post @ The Docking Station website. Peep that.

Aloe Blacc - I Need A Dollar

I watched that "How To Make It In America" show for the first time last week. Didn't live up to the hype, in my opinion. I thought it was going to crazy on the perma-grind-to-make-it tip, but it seems the dudes "struggling" are still livin' a life far from difficult (wasn't surprised to find out it was created by the minds behind dream-life Entourage). One thing I do approve of, however, is the series' choice of opening theme - Aloe Blacc's "I Need A Dollar". Stellar song.

Wiley x Shy FX (video + mp3)

I honestly don't think I've gone a day without listening to this joint since I first got my hands on it. The "Solo loves garage remix" I upped in December had to get taken down due to the fact that it will be one of the official remixes released later this month (28th). The whole entire package is straight UK murder - from Wiley & Emeli, to Solo (rmx), Herve (rmx), and now this Shy FX version.

TONIGHT - Frenzy w/ Brandon Sek

Excited to launch our new monthly open-format party tonight. The "Frenzy", much like the Disorganised monthly that we retired just last month, will focus on showcasing ahead of the curve music talents that are (as often as possible) virgin to our city's dancefloors. No better person to headline our launch party than Brandon Sek - Toronto musical tastemaker extraordinaire & author of the boundary pushing Curb Crawlers blog.

For those that aren't up on what exactly Sek does/has done, peep his interview with Eye Weekly.

Otherwise, full info is in the facebook event page.

Diplo x Gucci Mane (mixtape)

I've been sucking major balls (II) at fulfilling my duty as Mad Decent Ottawa promo rep in the past few months, so time I change that around a bit. I blame it on iTunes & other purchase sites' country download restrictions though... almost all the promo, release, and freebie links I'm given are not attainable due to IP address cockblockery.

This, however, is available to everyone - Mad Decent head honcho Diplo's new Gucci mixtape, featuring an absolutely stacked roster of remix talent (Mumdance, Flying Lotus, Benzi, Willy Joy, Flying Lotus, + more). I'm no Gucci fan (I actually find him boring after the 40 second mark of every song), but this tape provides the only bearable/enjoyable flip of the Mane I've heard to date.

2 joints off the mixtape:

Gucci Mane - Excuse Me (Diplo remix)

The XX x Pariah

Been just over a month since my last The XX mention. That post, featuring their remix of Florence + The Machine's "You've Got The Love", kinda stuck with me. The edit grew on me so much that I seriously think it was one of the top 5 remixes of 2009. This time around its a UK dude by the name of Pariah that takes quite the soft Burial-esque route on the XX touch up.

Brackles remixes

I don't know much about this Brackles cat. All I know is that I like him. His remix game is on point (to say the least), and he shares bills/stages with names (High Contrast, Mumdance, L-Vis 1990, Crazy Cousinz, Bok Bok, to name a few) that tickle my heavier tastebuds. People need to keep an eye & ear out for this guy.

Very effective, soft dub, stripping down of the otherwise MSTRKRFT monster:

On a slightly more powerful dubstep tip, but still without wompwomp-ing the shit out of it:
