Disorganised & Straight Goods merger!

BIG NEWS!!! The Straight Goods fam (DJ Drastik & myself) are pleased to announce our merger/fusion with one of Canada's most notorious monthly parties, Disorganised.

For anyone unfamiliar with the Disorg movement, it is a 5 year strong no-format dance party headed by DJs Booth & Chameleonic (aka Jokers of the Scene). The night has showcased some of the top artists of today and tomorrow, from MSTRKRFT, Diplo, Crookers, and Girl Talk... to Kid Sister, Flosstradamus, Switch, and Crystal Castles.

Just over a year ago, Drastik and I teamed up to do something very similar... host a monthly party where we introduce some our favourite foreign music talents to Ottawa's dancefloors. We've done our best to bring in names that have never been through this city before (Pase Rock, Treasure Fingers, Stretch Armstrong, Eli Escobar, U-Tern, among others).

Our 2 companies have always had parallel party aspirations: throw sweaty genre boundary-less jams alongside some of tomorrow's finest djs/performers. We will continue to do so until our knees buckle/ears fall off.

This Friday (@ Babylon) will be our merger kick-off jam.

From this point on, we welcome you to the renovated Disorganised - which will continue to go down the very first Friday of every month (always at Babylon).

Chromeo x Crookers

Just when I thought I had absolutely every track touched by Crookers, I hear this Chromeo edit on Motivation 2.

Sexy Neon Wine

Just received this new remix from Louie Fresco (1/2 of The Disco Villains, on the right in above pic). Its a DV spiced version of Noise Beat Propaganda's "Sexy Neon Wine". The boys took it in a totally different direction than they did with the previously posted Ludacris dancefloor banger - a genre bend that one should appreciate, given the lack of versatility many djs display now-a-days.

Noise Beat Propaganda - Sexy Neon Wine (Disco Villains remix) (zShare)

PS. I could see this song being in a commercial.

METHOD MAN & REDMAN - September 27th

Probably our biggest concert to date goes down this Saturday - the Still High Tour w/ Method Man & Redman. Only change/addition to the night's lineup is that Drastik & Tom Wrecks will be joining fellow Stylusts member Illo to throw down a 4 turntable team routine (8:30 set time).

For all you fashionably late arrivers... doors open at an early 8pm, and the show will end promptly at 11. Don't be that cool guy strutting towards a locked empty venue at 11:45.

Ticket prices and outlets are on the flyer, click to enlarge.

CAN'T WAIT... GONNA BE BIG!!!

Larry Tee - New Material Mix

Just snatched this from the La New Shit blog (run by fellow Ottawarians Eric & Vincent). The new mix comes from New York's dj/producer/promoter/club owner Larry Tee - a legendary figure who not only coined the term "electroclash", but also catapulted the careers of Peaches, Scissor Sisters, and Fischerspooner. The unreleased material rammed compilation is on the heavy electro-house tip, with familiar samples and vocals galore throughout.

Ottawa, Montreal, Toronto... go dance here on Friday

OTTAWA:
LA's Stones Throw recording artist & boogie-funk master Dâm-Funk will be at the Timekode monthly, alongside fellow Los Angeles music selector TY-G. The Timekode fam (Adam White, Zattar, Eric Roberts) has been consistent in throwing some of Ottawa's best dance parties. Heavily soul, funk, disco, and breaks rooted, the sweatbox of a party is probably the only night in town where you'll find a 35yr old man grooving and snapping his fingers (with eyes closed) in the middle of a heated break dance circle. The jams take place on the 2nd floor of an African restaurant in Chinatown - so you know people travel for that feel-good music.

Here is a Dâm-Funk guest appearance on U-Tern's radio show:

One Day Later Radio (#36) - Special Guest DAM-FUNK (stream link, with download option)

Tracklist:
Wizzard - These Are The Eightys (Club Version) (1982 Wizsong)
The Keith Diamond Band - All Night Rocker (1981 Millennium)
Terry Burrus and Transe - Love Rockin' (1983 Arista)
Midnight Express - Danger Zone (1983 Tri Fire)
Cliff Dawson - I Can Love You Better (1982 Boardwalk)
Omni - Body Groove (Dub Mix) (1983 Mercury)
Gunter Phillips - 1-2-3- LUV (198? Stanpico)
Raymun - Do You Feel Like I Feel (1983 Clockwork)
Wickett - Can't Get Enough Of You (1983 Mr. T)
David Astri - Dancing Digits (Option "B") (1983 Award)
Airforce - Body Data (1983 AVI)
Kevin McCord - Never Say (1985 Presents)
Prince & The Revolution - 17 Days (1984 Warner Bros.)
The General - Life In The Big City (1983 Vee Kay)
Home Boy aka 'Cecil Lyde' - A Love Connection (1986 Al West)
Dãm-Funk - Burgundy City (2008 Stones Throw)

Party is @ The Eri Café Pan-African Social Club (953 Somerset St. West). Doors 9pm.

MONTREAL:
Homies Jesse & Ivan (aka the Lookout boys) are throwing a massive jam at The Fix Fridays, with Fool's Gold's Kid Cudi, Kanye West's Plain Pat, Chicago's Hollywod Holt, and jukin' Million $ Mano. $10 cover before 12am is insanely cheap for this lineup, as is the $2 pre-midnight drink pricepoint.

Kid Cudi - Day N Nite (Old Money vocal edit) (zShare)
Kid Cudi - Cudi Get (zShare)
Kid Cudi - Is There Any Love? (ft. Wale) (zShare)

Hollywood Holt - Caked Up (Black Holes Remix) (zShare)

Kanye West - Flashing Lights (Mano Uptempo Remix) (zShare)
The Dream - Shawty is a 10 (Mano remix) (zShare)

Party is @ The Coda Club (4119 St.Laurent). Doors 11pm.

TORONTO:
The Tdot "Twelve Steps" Album Record Release Party with the producer himself on decks, DC's Jesse Tittsworth.

Tittsworth - WTF (ft. Kid Sister & Pase Rock) (zShare)

Party is @ Wrongbar (1279 Queen St. West). Doors 10pm.

Swedish hiphop music vidoes

The above is Adam Tensta's 4th single "Dopeboy", featuring E-Boi.
Tensta has been on a constant come-up since his last year's "My Cool" and "They Wanna Know" hits (off the debut album, It's a Tensta Thing).

And then there's Maskinen - but he keeps it native tongue.

Kanye West x Tom Wrecks

Aaaaah, just received some brand new goodness from Tom. He's finally come out of his summer hibernation mode (where unreachable via, literally, any non face-to-face forms of communication). The isolation + remix and production focus resulted in a slew of bangers, all of which will be posted here in due time.

The first of these - his twist on Kanye's newest single, "Love Lockdown". This shit'll be everywhere within a week... just wait and see.

Re-uploaded links:
Kanye West - Love Lockdown (Tom Wrecks remix) (zShare) or (divShare)

* he also made a dub version with less vocals, which I'll add to this post as soon as I get it.

Trey Songz - Paper Planes freestyle

M.I.A.'s Diplo produced "Paper Planes" beat has been getting an unreal amount of remix attention - even 50 Cent took a wack at it (a pretty wack wack, though). The Trey version is probably my favourite, due to both its unexpectedness and his little twists of the original version (ie. his rendition of "more records than the KGB").

Fatal plane crash, DJ AM & Travis Barker in critial condition

Pic by Bret Flashnick (Associated Press)

Holy fuck. I'm in complete shock right now. Been calling people (basically anyone I know that is friends with Adam) to hopefully get an update on their state. Adam Goldstein (DJ AM) & his music collaborator/former Blink 182 drummer Travis Barker are currently in critical condition after their plane crashed mid-night, killing the other 4 passengers on board. The flight was following their Friday night outdoor concert near the University of South Carolina - a free gig that drew over 10,000 people into the streets.

My thoughs and prayers are with the boys, their families, and the families of the perished.

Pieter Hugo photography

Pieter Hugo, winner in the Portraits section of the 2006 World Press Photo competition, was voted one of the world's 50 young photographers who will be considered great by 2025.

Following text by Pieter, on "The Dog's Master":

These photographs came about after a friend emailed me an image taken on a cellphone through a car window (this picture) in Lagos, Nigeria, which depicted a group of men walking down the street with a hyena in chains. A few days later I saw the image reproduced in a South African newspaper with the caption 'The Streets of Lagos'. Nigerian newspapers reported that these men were bank robbers, bodyguards, drug dealers, debt collectors. Myths surrounded them. The image captivated me.

Through a journalist friend I eventually tracked down a Nigerian reporter, Adetokunbo Abiola, who said that he knew the 'Gadawan Kura' as they are known in Hausa (a rough translation: 'hyena handlers/guides').

A few weeks later I was on a plane to Lagos. Abiola met me at the airport and together we took a bus to Benin City where the 'hyena men' had agreed to meet us. However, when we got there they had already departed for Abuja.

In Abuja we found them living on the periphery of the city in a shantytown - a group of men, a little girl, three hyenas, four monkeys and a few rock pythons. It turned out that they were a group of itinerant minstrels, performers who used the animals to entertain crowds and sell traditional medicines. The animal handlers were all related to each other and were practising a tradition passed down from generation to generation. I spent eight days travelling with them.

Continue reading about the 8 day project here.

OneLove Artists now launched!

This is the 1st of my two big announcements. About 2/3 years ago, I started promoting hiphop concerts and parties for Kapacity Entertainment, an Ottawa based business headed by good friends Mikey & Graeme. What started as a small local hiphop movement back in '99 quickly evolved into one of Canada's premiere concert/club promotion companies, bringing everyone in from De La Soul, Clipse, and Talib Kweli, to A-Trak, RZA, and Chromeo. Mikey & Graeme were the guys that got me into this music-driven lifestyle. My involvement with their events, bookings, venues, talents, and crowds eventually led to my own bookings and parties (of non-conflicting music genres) & management of Drastik. I owe it all to these two homies, so I'm beyond excited for them and their brand new branch of Kapacity - a talent bookings & management firm by the name of OneLove Artists & Entertainment.

Their official OneLove roster is stackeddd, to say the least.

James Brown x U-Tern

"The Godfather of Soul" + U-Tern = just loveliness.

James Brown - Dead On It (U-Tern Disco edit) (zShare)

* U-Tern's Hip-House mix back here.

EPMD x Duke Dumont

I totally skipped on posting this, but then the whole U-God/Yuksek hiphop/electro combo brought it all back. Another hiphop track getting tweaked by an electro-house king. This EPMD joint was remixed by 3 of UK's finest... Sinden, Herve, and Duke Dumont. I'm only posting the Duke version, due to the fact that my iTunes "play count" tab tells me I like it WAY more than the other 2 versions (and because it display's Duke's production versatility).

100TH POST!!! + A-Trak x Sinden

It ain't no Wilt Chamberlain feat, but still. Bigups to all who frequent on the reg, the newbie visitors (Russia, central US, where you at?), and fellow blog friends that exchange tunes & keep me in the loop of goodness.

Now a song. Graeme Sinden's recent edit of A-Trak's "Say Whoa". I think it bangs better than the Boys Noize version too.

ALSO - 2 BIG ANNOUNCEMENTS COMING THIS WEEK!

Blaqstarr x Diplo x Switch

I had always been on the neutral tip about Blaqstarr. Never hated, never loved, always liked, but never over the top. My views have changed - and this shit has been on steady repeat for 5 days now. There's something pleasantly raw about his voice and flow... like a rapper crossing over to RnB, with a slight hint of reggae in the way he lengthens some words. The always solid Diplo & Switch with the production credentials too. Why isn't this track absolutely everywhere?!?

THIS IS MY NEW JAM.

Blaqstarr - Get Off (produced by Diplo & Switch) (zShare)

OSO Food Wrap

So I started an "Ace ads" section back in July after seeing this witty advertisement. The section is due for an update.

This is a 3 part campaign designed by the DDB Sydney ad agency, comically stressing the importance of wrapping & protecting food. Me likey.

"Through this series of near-death experiences, OSO Food Wrap reminds us that our food can’t be expected to look after itself."

* click pics for full size.

Kid Sister x Simian Mobile Disco

UK's production and remix team Simian Mobile Disco, composed of James Ford & James Anthony Shaw, has a knack for molding careful instrumentations and minimal vocals into ear candy. Here is their deep and bubbly (almost submarine-ish?) version of Kid Sister's "Pro Nails", with very minor intricate sampling and absolutely no vocals from the original.

U-God x Yuksek

This was rather unexpected. Yuksek completely reworking a U-God joint. Remember when U-God sued the Wu Music Group (Wu-Tang Clan) for $170K earlier this year? As one of the article comments said, "U-God should give Wu Music $170K for all those wack verses over the years". Hahaha.

Kano - Hustler (video)

Vid snatched from Eskay

Yeah there are Dizzee and Wiley, but Kano is (and has been for a good minute now) proper reppin' the UK grime scene too. This is from his upcoming "140th Grime St" album, due for drop September 29th.

PS. Notice how the music crackhead bought a cd, but then got high off a cassette player? You can't play cds with a tape player, you crackhead.

MSTRKRFT x Mansion

Tdot is taking over. This remix might as well become the city anthem. The "Bounce" original was produced by Toronto's heavy-weights AL-P & JFK (which = MSTRKRFT), with vocals by N.O.R.E & Thunderheist's (+ Toronto's) Isis. Now it's been effectively twerked by the city's newest duo, Mansion (which is DJ Barletta & Van Helder).

DJ Kue - Fuk it up

Heavy hitting wobbly bass makes girls dance with their eyes closed & hands up. Fatman Scoop samples make guys punch air. Combining the two makes everyone go ape-shit on the dancefloor. Everyone knows this.

...and DJ Kue knew it too.
